Now the platform has over million users Zoom’s chief executive put out a heartfelt blog post apologising for early security issues including the issue of Zoombombing , where people enter chats they shouldn’t have access to, with the promise to fix it and make everything secure. The result is a much more robust product that is now, in terms of security, much stronger.

To make sure that only people you want to be in meetings can access them, Zoom meetings now have passwords as standard. Previously scheduled meetings including those scheduled via your Personal Meeting ID will have passwords enabled. The FBI recommends opting for longer pass phrases using a combination of common words.

Figure 1. Zoom now defaults to requiring a password when scheduling a meeting. An invitation is generated so you can send details to the intended invitees of how to join the meeting. This invitation includes the date and time, a link to join the meeting, and the Meeting ID and Password, as seen in Figure 2.

As the scheduler of several Zoom meetings, at no stage have I been the notified that the invitees will be able to join without inputting the password; my expectation was that they would need the password to join.

The random string is an encoded version of the password, which is listed in its plain form below the Meeting ID. At this point the obfuscation of the password seems pointless and offers no security value.

The next step is to send the invitation out; if all recipients are within your own company domain, then this is probably secure, as the internal IT team is in control. If an attendee enters the meeting ID into their Zoom application or online to join, they will have to locate and type the passcode to join the meeting. When adding a passcode after a meeting invite has been sent, you MUST re-send the invite so participants receive the passcode to join the meeting. Whether you are using the Zoom plugin for Outlook, the Zoom desktop application, or in the Zoom web portal, you can add a passcode to a new meeting during scheduling.
